14.02.1859 in Tapiau, Ostpreußen; † 26.10.1943 in Berlin (1) He was a German ethnologist and Africa researcher. (1) He was opponent of the theoretical assumptions of unilinear evolutionism. He advocated a more diffusionist approach in anthropological research and was representative of the culture area studies (Kulturkreislehre), as well as of the culture history method. (2) 1896: Voluntary work in the Ethnological Museum Berlin. (4) 1901: After finishing his PhD thesis about African music instruments, he took up an assistant position at the African Department in the Ethnological Museum Berlin in 1902. (4) 1910: Custodian of the African Department. (2) 1917: Chairman of the African Department. (2) 1924: He retired.
