Annotation
This painting depicts multiple teahouses in a pleasure quarter on the outskirts of Osaka. Courtesans are entertaining their customers, mostly of the merchant estate. In the foreground there is a roof-covered spring. Behind it we see the torii gate of a Shinto shrine and the pagoda and main building of a Buddhist temple with a pagoda and a kondo hall. A original tag is attached: ”Paysage Japonais aus environs de la Ville Ozakka, coll. van Overmer Fisscher." The mounting is in the yamato-hyogu style, using the nishikiori brocade with the woven ornament – karakusa (“Chinese grass”) with kikyo bell-flowers and cranes.
