Overmeer Fisscher's and Siebold's Japanese Collection
Annotation
This online catalogue introduces one of the most interesting Japanese collections in the MAE (Kunstkamera) RAS – the items gathered in 1820-s and later presented to the Emperor’s Saint-Petersburg Academy of Sciences by such well-known collectors and officers of the Dutch Ost-Indian Company – J. F. van Overmeer Fisscher and (presumably) Ph. F. von Siebold. The collection is mixed and comprises various items: paintings by Kawahara Keiga, Mori Yusen and other Japanese artists; swords, mechanical clock makura-dokei, items of traditional Japanese costume; lacquer-ware; models of Japanese boats and other items. The collection has been researched in the course of 17 years (2000 – 2017) as a series of research studies by the MAE RAS and its Russian, Japanese and European partners. In 2017 an illustrated catalogue “Japanese Ethnographic Masterpieces: Collection by J. F. van Overmeer Fisscher and Ph. F. von Siebold from Peter the Great Museum of Anthropology and Ethnography (Kunstkamera) Russian Academy of Sciences” (edited and composed by Aleksandr Y. Sinitsyn, Shiro Sasaki and Masaki Kondo) is to be published as a result of a joint project of the MAE (Kunstkamera) RAS and National Museum of Ethnology, Japan (MINPAKU, Osaka). The Catalogue deals with the history of the collection gathering, its study in mid. 19th – 20th cc., provides detailed information about its collectors as well as academic attribution of the collection items.
