This hat has a geometric design in a diamond pattern. This is the simplest and one of the oldest types of ornamentation used on Chugach woven articles.
The Chugach borrowed the methods of weaving hats from the Tlingit. The Alutiiq hats retain the shape and basic principles of ornamentation used by the Tlingit. The Kodiak Alutiiq people, in turn, learned to weave hats from the Chugach. Woven hats were found all along the coastal region of North America from Vancouver Island to Kodiak Island. The neighbors of the Alutiit, the Aleuts, Aglegmiut, and the Denaina, did not use woven hats.
