“In earlier times the stone axe, bone needle (which they also had to finish) and shell or the rare piece of iron were the only tools they had. And now they don’t have many more tools but they have polished and perfected bone articles and other things very well and are imitating the works of the Russians and are as good as their teachers” (Davydov 1812: 23).
