In Gerasimov’s view, the physical type of those people is heterogeneous and resulted from the admixture of Siberian Mongoloids, who had migrated to northeastern Europe from Siberia (see 6080-14), with European natives – the Cromagnons. The genetic evidence thus far provides no conclusive evidence as to whether this physical type was really admixed or whether it retained the features of a very ancient population that had emerged before western Eurasians diverged from eastern Eurasians. Physical heterogeneity, noted by Gerasimov, offers indirect support to the former alternative although it can as well result from individual variability. This reconstruction is based on a cranium from burial 44. Gerasimov observed that the male had a generally Caucasoid appearance, resembling the Baltic type common among modern Finns and northeastern Russians.
