Annotation
The people of Kodiak Island practiced weaving on a vertical warp, wrapping two or three rows of weft around one or two rows of vertical warp. To decorate the basketry articles they used a technique known as “false embroidery” in which the third weaving strand is replaced. The third strand of the weft is replaced with grass. The design created by means of “false embroidery” appears only on the outside of the article.
