Annotation
“When they are in kayaks the Aleuts (Kodiak Alutiits—S. Korsun) are not afraid of storms; gigantic ocean waves are nothing to them, they endure them like sea birds. The kayak is lifted to the tops of waves and then suddenly thrown down into the space between them; sometimes a huge oncoming wave completely engulfs it and you think that it is lost, but the kayak reappears on the top of the water with its brave and adroit paddlers who light-heartedly continue the journey” (Markov 1856: 96).
