Annotation
Among the Eskimos of Kodiak Island, weaving was a female occupation. This occupied their time in the winter because at other times of the year the women were busy preparing food for future use. They gathered basket materials at the end of spring or late in the fall because only at that time were the spruce roots uniform in color and it was easy to gather them. As a material for ornamenting their baskets they used the dry stems of wild grasses (Panicularia nervata).
