Folk costume of the Aukstaiciai women
The picture you have before you show the national dress of the Aukstaiciai girls. White predominates here more than in other Lithuanian folk costume.
The blouse is of white thin linen. A picked pattern (“rinktinis rastas”) adorns the sleeve ends. The same pattern though somewhat more modest adorns the shoulders of the blouse.
The chequered skirt is very full with gathers.
The bodice (“kiklikas”) adorned with a small pattern is short (down the waist), with pointed skirtlets at the front. It is laced across the front with a thin thread twine or with a piece of decorative cord.
The apron is made of white linen in plain weave with rare transverse light-coloured stripes diversified by a small pattern of a part of the design. A broad coloured band in a coloured design skirts the hem of the apron which is finished off by a fringe.
The head-dress consists of a fillet in picked weave (“rinktinis rastas”) the bottom edge of which is bordered with a narrow tape while the top edge is fringed with coloured thread. Two broad and four narrow coloured ribbons are fastened at the back of the fillet.
The light-coloured apron is decorated with a modest small-pattern (“dimuciai”) design.
