Folk costume of the Zanavyakai women
The picture you have before you shows a generalized costume of the Zanavykai women. The general colouring is rather dark because rich colours predominate.
The blouse is made of thin white linen, with a broad collar and embroidery on the shoulders. The sleeves are long and wide. The sleeves ends are gathered, with tapes put through the gathered end. Below the elbow the sleeves are embroidered with red thread in fleur-de-lys design. The same design is embroidered on the sleeve ends, as a band across the breast, on the shoulders, and on the collar.
The skirt of cloth with longitudinal stripes is very ample (4 to 5 metres), gathered.
The bodice (“kiklikas”) is made small-pattern cloth. It is bell-shaped, flaring, with a broad V-neck, fastened at the front with big decorative metal hooks.
The apron is rich in ornamentation and colour combinations, The design is constituted of originally conventionalized lilies combined into four-pointed stars. The ground is deep green. The colours of the pattern alternate chequer-wise. The apron is wide, gathered, fringed at the hem with coloured thread.
The head is covered with a white kerchief. Its hinder part is embroidered with a design in lilies, the edges are fringed. The fore part of the kerchief is adorned with a frontlet made of a plaited ribbon. The top edge of the ribbon is fringed, while the bottom edge is bordered with a narrow band, from under which stick small tongues of white material.
The shawl is made of white linen, adorned with a pattern of colored thread and a fringe.
