Annotation
Folk costume of the Samogitian women The costume of the Zemaichiai (Samogitian) women is notable for its decorativeness. The cloth pattern is simple, small, of a clear-cut rhythm The blouse is made of thin linen. A design is introduced only to trim the sleeve ends and the collar. The ornamentation is simple, geometrical with alternating narrow and broad stripes. The skirt is of cloth with longitudinal stripes. The stripes are narrow, of distinctly contrasting colours. The skirt 3.5 to 4 metres wide is gathered or pleated/ The “kiklikas” (bodice) is made of small-pattern cloth called in Lithuanian “dimas”. The pattern goes vertically. The colour stripes are seen distinctly in the horizontal direction. The bodice is of the shortened waist type, with a 8 to 15 centimetres belt pleated into small pleats 3 to 4 centimetres deap. The bodice is fastened with hooks or buttons made of coloured thread. The apron is light-coloured, with longitudinal stripes fringed. The head-dress is made of ribbon, plaited and sewn on to a cardboard hoop. The top edge of the ribbon is fringed with coloured thread while the bottom part is bordered with a patterned band called in Lithuanina “rinktine juostele”. At the back broad patterned ribbons are fastened. The shawl of chequered cloth is adorned with fringes.
