Folk costume of the Samogitian women
The costume of the Zemaichiai (Samogitian) women is notable for its peculiar decorativeness and vivid colouration. The cloth pattern is simple, of a clear-cut rhythm
The blouse is made of thin linen. A design is introduced only to trim the sleeve ends and the collar. The designs are geometrical, formed of narrow and broad stripes.
The cut of the blouse is simple. The sleeve ends, the front, the collar, the shoulders are decorated with fine cloth plaits or trimming.
The skirt 3.5 to 4 metres broad is made of cloth with transverse stripes. It is gathered of pleated and sewn on to the waistband.
The bodice is made of small-pattern cloth. The pattern is horizontal, it goes with the woof.
The bodice is of the shortened waist type, with a 8 to 15 centimetres wide belt pleated into small pleats. The bodice is fastened with hooks or clasps made of coloured thread.
The apron is white, with longitudinal stripes.
The head-dress is made of ribbon, plaited and sewn on to a cardboard hoop. The upper edge of the ribbon is fringed with coloured threads, To the lower part of the ribbon a twist of three different streamers interlaced one with another is sewn, with their many-coloured ends hanging down the back. Between them a broader ribbon is inserted.
The shawl of chequered cloth is adorned with fringes.
