Folk costume of the women of the Klaipeda region
The holiday dress of the women of the Klaipeda is original and interesting though it is not notable for abudance of colour. The decorativeness of the apparel as a whole is based on the contrasts of its separate parts. The dark skirt and bodice contrast vividly with the white blouse and the apron.
The blouse is made of thin white linen. A broad belt in a red picked design (“rinktinis”) adornes the sleeves below the shoulders. The blouse is without a collar, the neck is low-cut, gathered, and decorated with fine plaiting. Fine plaiting decorates the lower part of the sleeves too.
The skirt is made of chequered stuff predominant transverse stripes.
The “kiklikas” (a kind of sleeve-less bodice) of small-pattern fabric is short, with a wide neck-cut and white frilling along the edge. The bodice is fastened with decorative buttons made of cloth.
The apron is made of white material cloth with a picked pattern in colours aligned in transverse stripes. The hem of the apron shoes a broad-pattern strip.
The head is covered with a large kerchief, richly embroidered, with a frontlet over the forehead.
The shoulders are covered with a shawl of light-coloured cloth..
